About Eline Vulsma

I was born in Amsterdam in 1971. From childhood I've always taken pencils and paper with me. If I had finished my week-assignment at my (Dalton) primary school, I was allowed to choose myself what I wanted to do. Drawing! During the lessons at secondary school I've been scribbling drawings in my notebooks quite a lot.
In spite of my passion for drawing, an art education wasn't a logical choice at the time. I chose European Studies, at the University of Amsterdam. In my student years I started drawing cartoons, which I've been doing for a good many years, for instance for a local newspaper.

Now I've changed over to painting. I saw that the medium of painting has a lot more possibilities than it seems on the face of it. I've never received lessons in painting. It was a matter of just doing it and it really suits me. The best diploma is the painting itself.
Nowadays I spread my time between my job as a communications advisor and my work as a painter. After my study I ended up at the Stadsbank van Lening. There I learned the communication profession on the job. Again learning in practice proved to be the best way for me to achieve something.

My fascination for plants and animals is often the starting point for my paintings. As a child, I wanted to become a biologist, but because of a lack of talent for hard science, nothing came of it. But I can still paint those animals of course! I have a fondness for the not so cuddly species: insects, fish and birds. I keep on being amazed about all the variety and forms in which life exists.
